Life's Bane

In the second overarching plotline of the most recent game I ran, the players were looking for some answers to these mysterious dreams they were having.  Although they had already received many answers they knew in their souls that there were some critical answers to be found in an abandoned isolated asylum that was burnt down nearly 100 years ago.

During the exploration the players found their way into the lower levels of the Asylum where they found a door that was rather hard to open.  The door seemed stuck and the keys they had found didn't work on the door.  Needless to say they forced the door open and I read them the following passage:

"You feel the spiritual resemblance of a knell as this door is opened.  A chill, and the feeling that something was just broken.  You smell dread in the fetid air that now fill your nostrils.  You glance at Cynthia and can tell by the look she gives you that she feels it also." (Cynthia was an NPC they found while exploring the asylum, a dryad who used to be a caretaker of the asylum when it was running)

The players entered this section of the lower grounds where encountered several wraiths, hateful ghostly beings that feed on emotions, and one of the overarching bad guys of the campaign (whom they had just released).
